Background: "Thane Norton" was sleeping at home with
wife one night when a Being identifying itself as the Archangel Michael appeared
and informed him that God was calling in a favor. En route, the Archangel
Michael mutated "Thane," briefed him on his new abilities (reflective of
his true nature) and mission and dropped him off, informing him that his
local contact would be a man named "Coyote."
In the new world, he has no legal identity and so took the name "Thane Norton". Thane has not discussed the "mystical" aspects of his arrival, and since his abilities are derived from an altered genetic structure, there is no substantial "mystic" aura about him to draw attention from the local mystical entities. It wasn't long before Coyote contacted him and has given aid to Thane in return for occasional favors, usually involving meeting with people and taking possession of some package, insuring it's safe transit from one place to another. While Coyote doesn't seem to know anything about the Archangel, this doesn't bother Thane too much, because after all "God works in mysterious ways." Thane has no information as to Coyote's real identity, but he is keen to learn more about his contact. In one instance, Thane had a run in with what appeared to be a minor demon while protecting a sealed container. Though he defeated the demon, he barely survived the encounter. Thane still doesn't know what was in the sealed container he was protecting. He refers to his transformation power as "slamming", because to him the transformation process feels like he is drawing forth the essence of his true self and when it "slams in to him," he transforms.
Personality/Motivation: Mr. Gibson sincerely believes he is on a mission from God. However, he is not pretentious or evangelical about it. Instead, he is quite and withdrawn. The mission is to help protect the Earth from a demonic invasion. Coyote is his contact, and provides information about the invasion and sends him on missions as well. However, this does not consume all of his time, and while he waits and learns, he spends his time working with the Bay Area Guardians. He realizes that the theological implications of his professed background make many people uncomfortable, so he doesn't make a big issue about it. He won't debate faith, but he will debate theology. He believes there is only one God, and that God is the god of all religions, transcending all mortal attempts to interpret, understand or define God. Quotes: "Yes, I am on a mission from God. But right now that won't help us stop GRAB from robbing that bank." Powers/Tactics: The Archangel modified Thane so that his flesh and blood form is faster, resistant to psychic attacks and regenerates. However, he can also assume the aspect of his metaphysical nature: Earth. He can transform to Soil, Marble or Steel. He also has his natural intelligence and training to supplement his new aspects. Only his flesh changes when he transforms; his clothing and equipment remain unaffected (a real problem when moving through earth in Soil form). His "aura" is not particularly unusual, and only careful medical observation would notice his mutations (e.g. "He regenerates!"). He carries a duffel bag usually containing two changes of clothing, a spare automatic pistol with two extra clips (loaded), a spare shoulder holster, and a box of 50 rounds of ammo. It also contains a portable computer and a digital communications device (includes cellular phone, pager, email and voice mail). Appearance: Thane is a Caucasian (he refers to himself as a "Euro-mutt") who stands 6'6" tall and carries his mass evenly distributed on his thick skeleton. Because of his large frame, he doesn't look as a heavy as he is, and most people who ought to know better guess he weighs at least 40 pounds less than he does. He has dark brown hair, cut short in the front and sides with the back pulled in to a long pony tail. His brown eyes change colors to reflect his mood, with the extremes being black and green. His Soil form is a mottled collection of earth browns and tans. His Marble form is very handsome white with silver and green streaks, being a somewhat idealized reflection of his self image. In contrast, the Steel form is unattractively adorned with spikes and ridges, perhaps being a reflection of Thane's inner rage and anger. Campaign Use: Characters involved in either the Bay Area or in magical adventures might encounter Mr. Gibson. Creator's Notes: If you want an point-efficient character design, then throw out the Multiform and use "Only in Hero ID." The inefficiency arises because of the 59-point equipment and skill package shared by all forms. However, developing the character this way makes it easier to read and less confusing from a game mechanics perspective. Obviously it is up to the GM to determine who or what "God" really is. If the GM is uncomfortable with the theological implications, then have "God" be a powerful extradimensional entity or species that has lead Gibson to believe it is God. |
