Mr. Gibson
(Revised V&V character created by Patric L. Rogers)

Art by Jeff Phillips. Used with permission. Background:  "Thane Norton" was sleeping at home with his wife one night when a Being identifying itself as the Archangel Michael appeared and informed him that God was calling in a favor. En route, the archangel mutated "Thane," briefed him on his new abilities (reflective of his true nature) and mission and dropped him off, informing him that his local contact would be a man named "Coyote."

In the new world, he has no legal identity and so took the name "Thane Norton".  Thane has not discussed the "mystical" aspects of his arrival, and since his abilites are derived from an altered genetic structure, there is no "mystic" aura about him to draw attention from the local mystical entities.

It wasn't long before Coyote contacted him and has given aid to Thane in return for occaisonal favors, usually involving meeting with people and taking possession of some package, insuring it's safe transit from one place to another. While Coyote doesn't seem to know anything about the Archangel, this doesn't bother Thane too much, because after all "God works in mysterious ways."  Thane has no information as to Coyote's real identity, but he is keen to learn more about his contact, just to ensure everything is honest.

In one instance, Thane had a run in with what appeared to be a minor demon while protecting a sealed container.  Though he defeated the demon, he barely survived the encounter. Thane still doesn't know what was in the sealed container he was protecting.

He refers to his transformation power as "slamming," because to him the transformation process feels like he is drawing forth the essence of his true self and when it "slams in to him," he transforms.

The being calling himself "Gibson" is in fact an enigma.  He is a combination of conventional mortal and a metaphysical entity.  The metaphysical entity has existed for a very long time. In it's own words, "in the beginning there was God and I."  Over the millenia, the entity has staunchly fought on the side of mortals, and as a result made many enemies amongst those mystical and metaphysical beings that seek to exploit or harm mortals.  Many old entities will recognize "Gibson" when they get close, and Gibson will often recognize them. It is an unfortunate aspect of becoming flesh that the metaphysical entity does not always have access to its own vast store of memories or full range of abilties. The Archangel did not so much modify Gibson's mortal form, as unleash some of the nature of the metaphysical entity.

Gibson's relationship with God is simple: 1) Gibson will always be reincarnated as long as he is willing to do Good deeds, 2) he and God never speak unless one of them needs a favor. (Of course, both are constantly doing small favors for each other anyway (in game mechanics represented by Luck)).

Abilities: The Archangel modified Thane so that his flesh and blood form is quicker, resistant to psychic attacks and regenerates. However, he can also assume the aspect of his metaphysical nature: Earth. He can transform to Soil, Marble or Steel. He also has his natural intelligence and training to supplement his new aspects. Only his flesh changes when he transforms; his clothing and equipment remain unaffected.  His "aura" is not particularly unsusual, and only careful medical observation would notice his mutations (e.g. "He regenerates!").  He must "slam" to flesh before he can "slam" to another material type, his Hit Points are ratioed between forms.

He carries a duffle bag usually containing two changes of clothing, a Glock 17 with two extra clips (loaded), a shoulder holster, and a box of 50 rounds of ammo.  It also contains a portable computer and a digital communications device (includes cellular phone, pager, email and voice mail).  [The Glock is HTH +3 "to hit", 1d8 damage, autofire, 17 shots per clip.]

Appearance: Thane is a Caucasian (he refers to himself as a "Euro-mutt") who stands 6'6" tall and carries his mass evenly distributed on his thick skeleton. Because of his large frame, he doesn't look as a heavy as he is, and most people who ought to know better guess he weighs at least 40 pounds less than he does.  He has dark brown hair, cut short in the front and sides with the back pulled in to a long pony tail.  His brown eyes change colors to reflect his mood, with the extremes being black and green.  His Soil form is a mottled collection of earth browns and tans.  His Marble form is very handsome white with silver and green streaks, being a somewhat idealized reflection of his self image.  In contrast, the Steel form is unattractively adorned with spikes and ridges, perhaps being a reflection of Thane's inner rage and anger.
