Phade

(a.k.a. Southern Thompson)  A character for SR2.

History

Southern Thompson was born in 2031 in Gainesville, Florida. His father was corporate military for the Santa Fea Oil Conglomerate. His parents always encouraged him, but never forced or goaded him like other kids' parents. He enjoyed soccer and track in high school. During his junior year, his parents were transferred to Brazil. His magic abilities manifested and he ran away from home to join a rogue Copeira master in the jungles. He kept in touch with his parents; they worried about him, but were genuinely supportive. He also kept in periodic touch with Eddy Friar (whenever he could get into the matrix and drop Eddy some email that is).

He spent two years with the master. During that time he saw the remains of corporate wars - both against military and civilian targets. The atrocities of this slaughter turned him against killing forever.

After two years he returned to his parents, and the family was transferred back to the States. Southern and his father both had a new hatred of killing. His father requested to be transferred from corp military to security administration. The request was granted.

Southern finished his G.E.D. and studied police procedures and criminal investigation at the University of Florida, Gainesville for two years. After college, he moved to Seattle to become a private detective.

In Seattle, he got an apartment and started passing out business cards. Business has never been outstanding, but it pays the bills. Phade normally does investigative work, but has also done bodyguard and security work. He will not do wetwork, and even when doing bodyguard work, he reflexively pulls his Narcoject pistol first and the Maxpower second. His friend Eddy Friar over at Lone Star has been able to send him some jobs, too; especially with missing persons or suspected fraud and theft.

He met and befriended a mysterious woman named "Shelley Shredder." He knows very little about her, except that she seems to know everything that happens on the streets. She flops at his place a few times a month (she has demonstrated herself to be trustworthy, and so she has a key). She really is a pretty woman when she cleans up. She has promised - and to date kept that promise - never "to bring home trouble." They have an on-again-off-again sexual relationship and both like each other a lot.

His parents still live in Gainesville. He keeps in touch with them, and also keeps in touch with some of his old gang in Brazil (who are really hard to contact because they maintain a low profile and don't get in the Matrix much).

He didn't play sports in college because when his magic abilities didn't disqualify him, his unusual athletic skills scared everyone. About once a week, he goes to a nearby empty lot and indulges in a three or four-hour workout of acrobatics, flips, rolls and other copeira techniques. He jogs five miles, three times a week.

He maintains several sets of cloths - a variety for the street and a variety for classier corporate type jobs. He has a SIN, and no criminal record. Lone Star knows he is a physical adept private detective who lives in the poor part of town, but often does work in the better parts of town. He has a friendly rivalry with some of the Lone Star detectives and beat cops.

"Phade shows Lone Star 'What For'" - by Sergeant Eddy Friar, Lone Star

"I've known Phade since he was a wee little kid. He and I go way back to grade school. There was this time that some of my officers down at Lone Star wanted to see the 'legendary stealth skills of Phade'. So they picked him up one evening - their first mistake, it was evening - and we headed for an alley downtown. Well, they put ol' Moinahan in the middle of the alley- their second mistake; Moinahan, while not slow, isn't the brightest man on Earth - and Parker and Talbot stood one at each end.

"Well, when they were ready, they signaled Phade and he started walking down the alley. Casual as can be. About a quarter of the way down Phade faded! He just seemed to vanish into thin air! Well, I switched my cyberoptic to thermographic mode and started laughing! There was Phade, just strolling right down the middle of the alley the same way he had been! Poor Moinahan started paninking! He was really afraid that Phade was doing something to embarrass him! He was still looking over his shoulder when Talbot reported that Phade had strolled out the other end of the alley!"
