Morpheus Unbound  |  GURPS  |  Empire

Intelligent species of the Empire

The dominant sentient species of the Empire is homo sapiens sapiens, more commonly known as "human". There are a few subspecies which have developed based on living conditions, including the "heavy worlders", the "light worlders" and the zero-gravity "spacers".

Genetic modification of adult humans is well understood, and any modification is available restricted only by tech level. Modification of pre-natal or pre-pubescent macroscopic organisms is impossible at this time, although various research projects continue. Bioroids do not exist for similar reasons (bodies can be grown, but they are dumber than microbes, and get used for organ harvesting or cloning). It is possible to construct and harvest artificial biological organs that perform a variety of functions ranging from simple replacement parts (e.g. heart, lung, kidney) or add new functions (e.g. thermographic sight, electric shock). (See Ultra-Tech, Robots and Bio-tech for more information).

Genetic modification of the other species is largely restricted to installation of artificial organs. However, some success has been achieved with other modifications (use Robots, but limit modifications to those available for one TL lower than actual TL).

With the distinct exception of the Averni clan, and the possible exception of the Terralopsian clan, the Clans are all human.

There are about two dozen Client species, including the Kim'soh, Gormelites and Kharakan Giants. None of the other clients are, technically, human, and not all are mammalian or humanoid.

Cloning and brain-taping technology exist, where the tech level permits it. Social conditions vary on the acceptance of these technologies.
