Prologue

"Dullon, my friend, by the Right of Command, I ask that you avenge me! Vanquish the T'laren..." and with a final choked gasp, Emperor Kilgar was no more.

Dullon, known as The Emperor's Sword, looked at the advisors standing nearby. He looked at old Amos, who had been the Emperors' vizier for three generations, "Amos, your memory never fails and you never lie, repeat to me Kilgar's last words."

Ashen faced, Amos spoke slowly, and quietly, so only the Advisors heard, "Dullon, my friend," Amos' voice cracked, "by the Right of Command, I ask that you avenge me. Vanquish the T'laren."

The Advisors stood stunned; never before had Kilgar ordered anyone's death. Dullon lowered the limp body of Kilgar, last Emperor of the Republic to the floor. Kilgar had not been Emperor long, and had no children. With no children, the Right of Guardianship ended. Only the Right of Command remained.

The Emperor's Sword stood so swiftly that the Advisors scattered. Instantly, he drew his weapons - the dreaded Thunderstroke gauss pistols, and swiftly, mercilessly shot the Emperor's executioner where he stood, held by the guards. Without wasting a motion, he shot Representative Rothgar of the Clan T'laren, and Senators H'ylx and Tulr also of the Clan T'laren. The Emperor's Sword slew all sixteen members of the Clan T'laren present in the assembly chamber so swiftly it was several minutes before anyone understood what had happened. But by then, Dullon was gone, vanished in the confusion.

The Rights of Internment came to pass, but no T'laren were present. For though it had been only a few days, The Emperor's Sword had become a scourge and a terror of the T'laren. Already, he had mounted weapons and vessels and bombarded T'laren planets into dust as the other clans became caught in the bloodlust.
