No more 'Mr. Nice Chef.' Image copied from http://www.imagescentral.org.Background: Despite the hopes and wishes of his father and grandfather whose names he bears, Stanis Ivanov Boris Yeltzin was born with two desires: to be a great chef and to be a superhero. When he discovered he didn't have superpowers, he determined he was going to be a great chef for the world's foremost superheroes. While he was young, his family indulged his culinary interests, but as he grew older they tried to direct him to more scholarly and respectable pursuits like politics. Stanis indulged his parents and studied politics and current affairs (which he enjoyed anyway), but he always made time to learn the art of being a chef. Even his famous and politically powerful grandfather couldn't deter him, and finally the family decided that as long as Stanis prepared for the political life, then he could also study to cook.

When he completed his culinary studies, Stanis appealed to his grandmother (who had been a famous World War II heroine) and she helped him secure a job with Watch Tower. He proved to be an excellent chef, his archetypal Russian humor and fabulous cooking won over any doubts the Watch Tower staff had. In fact, the R&D technicians in particular looked forward to the late night pastries and coffees the gregarious Yeltzin would deliver to the lab. While he readily admitted he didn't understand most of what they did, he always showed an interest and listened attentively to the otherwise underappreciated technicians.

As a chef for Watch Tower, Stanis got to meet many of his idols. He developed a poorly concealed crush on Alpha Team member Jade Phoenix. While Jade Phoenix politely ignored the crush, she also agreed to teach Stanis some of her Kung Fu and he became her first pupil. Jade Phoenix had studied dozens of Kung Fu forms, and finally created her own. Her own style maximized flexibility, eschewing katas and anything which might make it predictable.

It was during one of his late night visits to the biological labs that the accident occurred. A strange biological construct had been discovered on an ocean voyage, and the scientists were studying it. As the technicians gathered for pastries, the object began to change: it split open and spewed forth a dozen tentacles. The tentacles found poor Stanis and, apparently decided he made a nice bludgeon, trashed the lab with his body. In the confusion and terror, the scientists and technicians fled in terror and sealed the lab before they realized that Stanis had not made it out. They ran to summon help. The creature continued to thrash about splattering chemicals, releasing biological agents and radioactive isotopes everywhere. After several minutes the creature settled down and began to carefully inspect the remains of the lab. Stanis, his battered and barely conscious body hung limply from one tentacle.

It is unknown what caused the transformation, but the creature didn't notice as the size of it's bludgeon change. It did notice, however, when the soft fleshy thing it had been holding began to squeeze very hard on its tentacle. The creature looked at what it was holding, surprised to find a shiny metal human instead of the soft pink one it had picked up. The creature was even more surprised when the shiny metal thing punched it in the face. The blow sent it hurtling back into a large vault-like containment unit.

Stanis was livid and he followed the creature in to the containment unit. There he punched it and grappled with it for several minutes. They conflict raged about the unit as the two combatants hammered away at each other, neither quite able to get the upper hand. Once Stanis' rage had abated, he began to enjoy himself, and it wasn't long before he realized that he and this strange creature were having a friendly rough-and-tumble. And then the creature reached out with a telepathic probe.

The technicians and Jade Phoenix entered the lab carefully. Their NBC suits slowed their movement, but were required in the contaminated lab. They expected to find a strange creature tearing it apart or feasting on Stanis' shattered body. They were not prepared for what they found: a tall naked metal man explaining the art of braised salmon to a telepathic mutant squid just emerged from its chrysalis and confused about its surroundings.

Finally Stanis was a superhero and a chef and he has never been happier.

Personality/Motivation: Stanis is having the time of his life. He loves being a superhero and role model to millions.  He is a "strong-jawed hero". Note that he considers members of Watch Tower to be part of his family (Affiliation).

While he is proud of both his Russian heritage and his family, he is also protective of his secret identity, as he does not want certain members of his family to know he is a superhero.  (His grandmother, of course, knows.)  Away from the public, Stanis assumes his mortal form and speaks with perfect English.  In the public eye, or anytime away from his Watch Tower associates, he assumes his armored form and speaks with a distinct Russian accent (he wants the world to know that Russia still produces great heroes).

Quotes: "Don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry."
"There is no more wonderful life than being a superhero!"
"Nyet! Nyet! I said a teaspoon of salt! Throw it away and start over."
"Fear not, comrades I am here to protect you."
"If you surrender now, I won't have to open this can."
"An important teaching of kung fu is to use the energy of ones foe against himself. The Kodiak Steel corrallary is to use ones foe against his friends. Foes make great throwing weapons."

Powers/Tactics: Kodiak Steel is a brick. He moves with a powerful fluid grace and his muscles are 100% efficient. He is immune to most small arms fire, and resistant to heavier weapons.

In combat he will usually reserve a half-move and try to coordinate his actions with other Watch Tower members, using grabs or throws to set targets up.  He rarely worries about his own well-being and is very comfortable being a shield for his teammates.

The nature of his origin has left him with weaknesses against chemicals, biological agents and radiation.

Appearance: As Stanis Yeltzin, he is 5'10" tall, weights 165 lbs., has black hair and blue eyes. The transformation to steel increases his size and radically chanes his appearance. Kodiak Steel is 7'6", 500 lbs. with hairless shiny silver skin.

Campaign Use:  Kodiak Steel is a member of Watch Tower, the worlds foremost superhero team.

Creators Notes: Originally, Kodiak Steel had Double Knockback on STR. His powers changed slightly after he lost a fight with Taurus (of the New Conquerors) and spent time in the hospital from his greivous injuries. See the House Rules section for more on the Double Knockback on Strength advantage.

Our group also uses certain optional Hero System rules.  See the House Rules page for details.
