Discovered

...Continued from Day 3

David got out of school and promptly headed to Jennifer's house.  His mom was worrying about her for whatever reason.  Jen can take care of herself, she's had medical training! He thought to himself.  Then again, it will make a nice excuse to fire up her Dreamcast for an hour or two.  Man, she's got a sweet home-entertainment system.

He heard the music when he was half-way up the drive.  That's Manson's "Rock is Dead", he thought to himself, Jen borrowed that a while ago for her "raucous metal collection" disk.  But she only listens to that when something's eating at her.  She's never played it that loud before.  Maybe something really is wrong.  For the first time, he started to worry about his big sister.

David used his key to open the door.  The blaring music caught him off guard, and he headed toward the living room to shut it off.

As David came into the living room, something on the wall caught his eye.  His mouth fell open and he temporarily forgot the deafening music.  The last thing in the world he had expected to find was his sister on the wall like some kind of decoration.  For almost a full minute, he couldn't form a single coherent thought as he just stared.  She looks like she's sleeping, he decided.  Except she's on the wall.  He walked slowly around the room.  I don't see any wires.  It really looks like her.  The phone is resting on her stomach.  This is just not real!

David found the remote in the middle of the floor.  He picked it up and stepped to the side.  He turned to Jen and hit the "stop" button.  As if on cue, Jennifer's eyes popped open at the sudden silence.  She instantly noted David's presence and with an odd looking gravity-bending leap, she left the wall and landed gracefully on the living room floor.

Jennifer Mulligan glared at her kid brother.  "How long have you been here?" she demanded to know.

"Holy crap!" David shouted, "my sister has powers!"  He started leaping about the room in his excitement.  "This is so freaking awesome!"  Jennifer took stock of the room and listened to see if anyone else was in the house.  She heard no one over the slight ringing in her ears.

Suddenly, David stopped and looked at his sister.  "Uhm, are you a good-guy or a bad-guy?"  The gleem never left his eye.  He didn't really care, either way, he was just excited to actually know a powered person.

Jennifer smiled slightly, "I'm a good guy.  Now, look, I know you want to blab this to everyone but you have to promise me you won't tell anybody!  No one at school, none of your friends, acquintances, not even mom or dad!  Nobody!"  Jennifer turned slightly away and mumbled "Especially not mom.  She's already got the number for the CDC taped to the fridge."  Jennifer sighed.  She loved her mother dearly, but feared that sometimes her mom was a bit too reactionary.

"What?  No way!"  David was incredulous.  Here was the biggest deal in his life and he couldn't tell anyone?  "You've got to let me tell someone!"

"David!" Jennifer wheeled on him so fast he jumped, "what is the number one reason that heroes in the comics struggle to keep their identities secret?"

"Oh, that's easy," David replied with a dismissive wave, "to keep the bad guys from hurting their families..." his face fell as he realized that yes, the more people he told, the greater the chance that some villainous powered person would try to kidnap him, hurt him, or worse try to hurt mom and dad.  He looked positively heart-broken.

Jennifer saw the crest-fallen look in her brother's eyes.  He's such a sweet kid, she thought to herself, I wish I could let him tell his friends, but it's just too dangerous.  Especially considering that I'm still learning about these powers of mine.  "Hey kiddo," she said in a reassuring voice, "want to see what I can do?"  She gave him a conspiratorial smile.

David fairly vibrated in his excitement, "HELL YEAH!"
