Avatars. Throughout human history there have been those who have transcended the normal human
boundaries. They accomplished this by study, meditation and sometimes random luck. Before Thomas Edison, there had been only a few hundred throughout history. Edison, possessed of
extraordinary intelligence, conducted an experiment which blended with the growing social axiom of the world to make it possible for literally anyone to transcend these boundaries. (Edison had no clue
what he had done; he was trying to study gravity and considered his experiment an abject failure.) Typically the surest way is through meditation and personal growth, but that does not guarantee
anything. The term avatar came from India. Originally meant to indicate those who were manifestations of the Hindu gods, the term has come to mean anyone with superhuman abilities. There is no
widely recognized origin of powers, however some anecdotal evidence exists to suggest genetic links. One example is the ruling family of Tuvalu: three of the island nations four avatars are members of
the royal family. In some parts of the world, the avatars are viewed as living manifestations of the divine and in other parts they are variously viewed as demons, angels, mutants, heros, criminals,
blessed, freakish, whatever. By and large, avatars are more healthy and attractive than the average person, although some have been known who are hideous by any standards. |

Now, in 2000, approximately 1% of the 4.8 billion people on the Earth have powers to some extent. Most of these powers are latent or benign and go unrevealed or unnoticed the person's entire
life. However, many, similar to myself have their powers brought forth through some accdient or external event. Others, like Archer or Motivator
are born with abilities which manifest naturally, usually during puberty. Only about 1 in a million people has any real measurable or significant power level. It is well document that the scale of the powers exhibited has expanded since those soldiers during WWI. It is inconceivable that in the 1930s or 1940s beings like Ms. Fist or
Novastar would have existed, but they exist today. While they are powerful, there are beings yet more powerful. As if the
advent of powers among Earth humans sent out a signal flare, dozens of extra-terrestrial and extra-dimensional species have come to Earth. Some have stayed, others have moved on. Some have made their
presence known and felt, others simply tried to blend in. Dorian Gray
was the US President from 1972 to 1976 when he retired. While he saw the Vietnam Conflict end, he was really a boring president. He enacted a body of laws regarding the use of powers and the rights of extra-terrestrial and articial intelligence that many called Dorian's Folly. (At the time, there were only a few hundred powered people, four or five ETs on the planet and no AIs.) However, his laws would later be referred to as Dorian's Foresight when during the 1980s hundreds of ETs and AIs arrived on the planet and the indiginous powered population exploded ten to twenty fold.
The nature of war was grossly altered by the presence of superhumans. Dozens fought in World War II, but the most significant difference happened in 1946 when a Jewish "necromancer"called upon those butchered
in the Holocaust to rise up and take revenge. They complied and within 24 hours a signficant portion of the population of Germany was dead or fled to neighboring nations. Germany was never divided into East
and West (the Soviet Union still formed, just without Germany), but today there is still a huge chunk labeled "the Dead Zone" and no one wants to live there. (Although it is apparently safe to do so and several
criminal groups have created bases there over the years.) |
